World number one Tiger Woods in command at British Open

World number one Tiger Woods shot himself into the lead after a course record equaling 7 under in the second round of the British Open at the Royal Liverpool Course in Hoylake.

Woods, who resumed on five under, made his move with an eagle and six birdies to reach 12 under.

The eagle came at the par-four 14th when his four-iron approach pitched in line and bounced into the hole.

American Chris DiMarco set the record earlier with a sizzling round of 65 to move into contention on nine under.

Woods was delighted with the way he played after dropping a shot at the third hole. "I made a few bombs and obviously 14 helped a lot," said Woods.

"It's a hole where you're just trying to make four and get out of there and to make two was just a bonus. Trust me I was just trying to get the ball on the hole and take my four," he added.

The 37-year-old DiMarco had got off to the perfect start with birdies at the first two holes. He strengthened his position with four consecutive birdies around the turn and then traded shots on the 15th and 17th before finishing with a birdie at 18.
