McConaughey’s car put up for auction

Matthew McConaughey is leading a drive to raise money for victims of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita by auctioning off his blue convertible 1971 Corvette Stingray on eBay.

Katrina hit the Gulf Coast on Aug. 29, forcing several hundred thousand Louisiana evacuees to flee to Texas. Rita slammed southeast Texas on Sept. 24.
McConaughey, who was born in Uvalde and grew up in Longview, says he bought the Mediterranean blue sports car in the late 1990s at a California car show.

McConaughey wrote on the posting: "I admire and enjoy this car, but it's a luxury that I'm willing to relinquish at this point because I am fortunate enough to have everything I need, and the sale of it will help so many."
The Mediterranean blue car, nicknamed 'Mako', was bought in a 1998 auction and has 100 000 miles on the clock.

McConaughey, an Uvalde native named People's Sexiest Man Alive, says he's driven it to Mexico and across Texas many times -- with the top down. Bidding on it will continue until Thursday, with all proceeds to be donated to Oprah's Angel Network.
