Lebanese officials say more than 40 killed and many more wounded

Lebanese security officials say Israeli air strikes have killed more than 40 civilians and wounded many more in Wednesday's attacks in the south and east of the country.
At least 20 people were reported killed when an air strike destroyed 15 homes in the southern village of Srifa, near Tyre, while police said at least 20 died in other air raids.

Israeli bombers, which had been focusing on Hezbollah strongholds in southern Beirut, also hit a Christian suburb on the eastern side of the capital for the first time.
The target was a truck that was used to drill for water which Israeli troops may have mistaken for a missile launcher. The vehicle was destroyed, but nobody was hurt in that attack.
Civilian deaths were also reported in air strikes on other parts of the south and near Baalbek in the east of Lebanon.
On Tuesday, Hezbollah fired at least 100 rockets at northern Israel, hitting Haifa and several border towns.

More than 250 Lebanese and 25 Israelis have died in fighting that erupted after Hezbollah guerrillas abducted two Israeli soldiers during a cross-border raid on July 12.
Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert says Israel's offensive against Hezbollah will continue until the soldiers are released and Israelis are safe from rocket attacks.
