Retro Replay: Return of the Porsche 996 Flat Nose

DINSLAKEN, Germany — German tuner Auto-Expert took the wraps off of its Porsche 996 Flat Nose this week at the 5th International Porsche Treffen, Europe's largest Porsche gathering.

The vehicle, finished in an exclusive "chrome-lacquer silver," is a postmodern version of the Porsche 935, the racing version of the Porsche 930, which made its debut in 1976.

The original Flat Nose competed in the FIA World Championship. Porsche designed it as a rule-buster after discovering a loophole that allowed it to move the headlights into the front spoiler to reduce drag and create more downforce for high-speed circuits. This flat nose became the distinguishing feature of the 935 and was copied for the roadgoing 911.

Auto-Expert said in a statement that its new version prompted "countless discussions and philosophical questions" among enthusiasts. But, apparently, the reaction was positive enough for the tuner to move forward with plans to produce the body parts by the end of the year.

What this means to you: A respected Porsche tuner takes a page out of the retro playbook — and scores with fans.
